Services

Asthma is a chronic lung disease where the airways are sensitive and often inflamed, even without visible symptoms. During an asthma attack, the airways become swollen, muscles tighten, and breathing becomes difficult, but treatment can effectively manage these symptoms. It is the most common serious chronic illness in children, affecting nearly 1 in 10 in the United States, and is a leading cause of missed school days and hospitalizations. Factors like family history, infections, allergens, tobacco smoke, air pollution, and other allergic conditions (eczema, food allergies, hay fever) can increase the risk of developing asthma. While the number of children with asthma has been rising globally, the exact reasons for this trend remain unclear.

Asthma attacks or worsening symptoms are caused by triggers, which can be found in your home, your child's school, child care, and other environments. Common asthma triggers include allergens like dust mites, animal dander, cockroaches, mold, and pollen, as well as sinus and lung infections such as sinusitis or pneumonia. Things your child breathes in, like tobacco smoke, air pollution, cold or dry air, perfumes, and fumes from heaters or fireplaces, can also trigger asthma. Exercise may cause wheezing, coughing, or chest tightness, but proper medication can help manage symptoms. While it's impossible to eliminate all asthma triggers, steps can be taken to reduce them, such as avoiding smoking in the home or car, using allergy-proof covers for mattresses and pillows, washing bedding and stuffed toys in hot water regularly, vacuuming and dusting frequently, removing carpets from bedrooms, and using HEPA air filters to clean the air. These precautions can help create a healthier environment for children with asthma.

TPG Pediatrics is excited to introduce Breathe Easy, a new program designed to support children with asthma or a history of wheezing by helping prevent symptoms, minimize school absences, and reduce emergency visits. Each child will have a dedicated care coordinator who will monitor their asthma, ensure necessary medications are available, assist with refills, schedule follow-ups, and provide education to address any concerns. Care coordinators will check in every three months with a brief 10-20 minute call to partner with you in your child’s care, making it easier to keep them healthy and active. In the coming weeks, you’ll receive a message from TPG Pediatrics with a link to schedule a time for your check-in—please watch for it and sign up at your convenience. Together, we’ll help your child stay healthy and just be a kid!
