What is Food Insecurity?

The USDA defines Food Insecurity as a state in which “consistent access to adequate food is limited by a lack of money and other resources at times during the year.

Food Security

  • High food security: no reports of food access problems or limitations.
  • Marginal food security: one or two reports of anxiety over food sufficiency or shortage of food in the house. Little or no indication of changes in diets or food intake.

Food Insecurity

  • Low food security: reports of reduced quality, variety, or desirability of diet. Little or no indication of reduced food intake.
  • Very low food security: Reports of multiple occasions of disrupted eating patterns and reduced food intake.

Rx for Food is one way that health care providers can help with “food insecurity” experienced by their patients and their families.

Our providers may be able to provide you with a prescription for food. If you qualify, they will give you a Prescription (RX) for Food to take to one of our partners food pantries.
